Writing The Dangerous Book

Where the work was done (the crypt, All Saints, Uplands)

I had the good fortune to be given use of the crypt, dusty and virtually unused, with its black lattice windows at ground level. It was quiet. And spacious. I could expand there.

That year, 2014, I was diagnosed with cancer. Starting what was going to be one of the most demanding things I'd ever attempted, I felt like I was in a small boat with a mighty wind of urgency blowing behind me. By April 2015, I had reached the Jesus story, and I was in the garden of Gethsemane facing major surgery.

I have so many memories of blessed hours spent in the crypt. Walking there on Christmas morning to work on the Book of Revelation while everyone was going for their Christmas dinners. Rewriting the Book of Job as a one-act play. Drawing a huge chart of the four synoptic Gospels and their variations in telling. Then in 2016 I finished the Genesis Coda and knew the work was done. I still give thanks.
